5-MBPB structure

5-MBPB (5-Methylbenzofuran-2-ylpentanamine) is a psychoactive drug and research chemical belonging to the substituted cathinone class, which are derivatives of cathinone, a compound found in the khat plant. It is structurally related to substances such as 5-APB and 6-APB, commonly known as "benzofurans," and is considered to have stimulant and possibly entactogenic properties, although comprehensive studies on its pharmacology and toxicity in humans are lacking.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

5-MBPB is a synthetic compound that features a benzofuran ring system, which is a structure composed of a benzene ring fused to a furan ring. The chemical formula for 5-MBPB is C12H17NO, indicating it includes a chain of five carbon atoms attached to the nitrogen atom of the benzofuran system, with a methyl group attached to the fifth carbon of the furan ring, distinguishing it from its close analogs.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

The pharmacological action of 5-MBPB is primarily thought to involve the release and/or reuptake inhibition of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin, similar to other substituted cathinones. This action can lead to euphoric, stimulating effects, and alterations in sensory perception and emotional states. However, the exact mechanism of action and affinity for various neurotransmitter transporters and receptors remain largely unexplored due to the scarcity of scientific research on this compound.

Legal Status[edit | edit source]

The legal status of 5-MBPB varies by country, with some jurisdictions having specific legislation controlling its possession, distribution, and use, often as a result of its classification as a novel psychoactive substance (NPS). In countries where analog laws exist, 5-MBPB may be considered illegal if it is structurally similar to a controlled substance.

Safety and Toxicity[edit | edit source]

As with many research chemicals, the safety profile, toxicological data, and long-term health effects of 5-MBPB are not well-documented. Its use carries potential risks, including but not limited to, cardiovascular issues, neurotoxicity, and psychological dependency. Users are advised to exercise caution and adhere to harm reduction practices when experimenting with such substances.
