History[edit | edit source]

Albertsons was founded by Joe Albertson on July 21, 1939, in Boise, Idaho. The first store was located at 16th and State Streets in Boise. The company expanded rapidly, and by 1959, it had grown to over 100 stores. In 1969, Albertsons became a publicly traded company.

In 2006, Albertsons was acquired by a consortium led by Cerberus Capital Management, and the company was split into three parts. The standalone Albertsons stores were sold to SuperValu, while the remaining stores were operated under the Albertsons LLC banner.

In 2013, Albertsons LLC acquired the stores it had sold to SuperValu, reuniting the company. In 2015, Albertsons merged with Safeway Inc., creating one of the largest food and drug retailers in the United States.
