Alejandro Zaffaroni
Alejandro Zaffaroni (February 27, 1923 – March 1, 2014) was a Uruguayan-born biotechnology entrepreneur who played a significant role in the development of several biopharmaceutical companies. He is known for his contributions to the field of drug delivery systems and controlled release technology.

Alejandro Zaffaroni was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Montevideo before moving to the United States to pursue further education. Zaffaroni earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Rochester in New York.

Zaffaroni began his career at Syntex, a pharmaceutical company, where he worked on the development of oral contraceptives. His work at Syntex led to the establishment of Alza Corporation in 1968, a company focused on developing advanced drug delivery systems. Alza Corporation was instrumental in creating transdermal patches and other controlled release technologies.
