Development of Sophrology[edit | edit source]

Alfonso Caycedo, founder of sophrology

In 1960, Caycedo coined the term "sophrology" from the Greek words "sos" (harmony), "phren" (mind), and "logos" (study). He aimed to create a scientific discipline that would study the consciousness in harmony. Sophrology combines techniques from Eastern meditation, yoga, and Zen with Western relaxation methods and hypnosis.

Caycedo's approach was to develop a method that could be used in clinical settings to help patients manage stress, anxiety, and other psychosomatic conditions. Sophrology has since been applied in various fields, including sports, education, and corporate wellness.

Academic and Clinical Work[edit | edit source]

Caycedo held various academic positions throughout his career. He taught at the University of Barcelona and later at the University of Madrid. His clinical work was primarily focused on the application of sophrology in treating psychiatric disorders. He also conducted research on the effects of sophrology on mental health and well-being.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Alfonso Caycedo's work has left a lasting impact on the fields of psychiatry and personal development. Sophrology is now practiced worldwide, with numerous schools and practitioners dedicated to its teachings. Caycedo's methods continue to be used in therapeutic settings to promote mental and physical health.
