Andrea Baccarelli
Andrea Baccarelli is an Italian-American physician-scientist and an expert in the field of epigenetics and environmental health. He is currently the Chair of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Andrea Baccarelli was born in Italy. He earned his MD degree from the University of Perugia in Italy. He later pursued a PhD in epidemiology from the University of Milan.
Career[edit | edit source]
Baccarelli began his career as a physician, specializing in internal medicine and endocrinology. He transitioned into research, focusing on the impact of environmental exposures on human health through epigenetic mechanisms. His work has significantly contributed to understanding how environmental factors such as air pollution, heavy metals, and endocrine disruptors can alter DNA methylation and other epigenetic markers, leading to various health outcomes.
Research and Contributions[edit | edit source]
Baccarelli's research has been pivotal in linking environmental exposures to changes in the epigenome. He has published extensively on the effects of air pollution on cardiovascular disease, neurodevelopmental disorders, and cancer. His studies have shown that exposure to pollutants can lead to epigenetic modifications that may be passed down to future generations.
Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]
Andrea Baccarelli has received numerous awards for his contributions to environmental health and epigenetics, including the Harvard School of Public Health's Mentoring Award and the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology's John Goldsmith Award.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Baccarelli resides in New York City and continues to contribute to the field of environmental health through his research and teaching at Columbia University.
