Andrea Ballabio (born January 1, 1957) is an Italian geneticist and molecular biologist known for his research on lysosomal storage disorders and the role of transcription factors in human disease. He is the founder and director of the Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine (TIGEM) in Naples, Italy.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Andrea Ballabio was born in Naples, Italy. He earned his medical degree from the University of Naples Federico II in 1981. He later completed his specialization in Pediatrics and Medical Genetics.
Career[edit | edit source]
After completing his education, Ballabio worked at several prestigious institutions, including the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany. In 1994, he founded the Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine (TIGEM) in Naples, where he currently serves as the director.
Research[edit | edit source]
Ballabio's research has significantly contributed to the understanding of lysosomal storage disorders, a group of inherited metabolic disorders caused by defects in lysosomal function. His work has led to the identification of several genes responsible for these disorders and has provided insights into their molecular mechanisms.
One of his notable contributions is the discovery of the transcription factor TFEB, which plays a crucial role in the regulation of lysosomal biogenesis and function. This discovery has opened new avenues for the development of therapeutic strategies for lysosomal storage disorders and other diseases involving lysosomal dysfunction.
Awards and honors[edit | edit source]
Andrea Ballabio has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to medical research, including the European Society of Human Genetics Award and the Telethon Dulbecco Award.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Ballabio resides in Naples with his family. He is actively involved in various scientific communities and continues to contribute to the field of genetics and molecular biology.
