Anglo-Scandinavian
[edit | edit source]
The term Anglo-Scandinavian refers to the period in history when the Scandinavian Vikings settled in England and Scotland, from the late 8th to the early 11th century. This era had a significant impact on the medical practices of the time, introducing new techniques and remedies to the Anglo-Saxon world.
Historical Context[edit | edit source]
The Viking Age was a period of significant exploration, expansion, and cultural exchange. The Vikings, originating from Scandinavia, were known for their seafaring abilities and established settlements across various parts of Europe, including the British Isles. This period is referred to as the Anglo-Scandinavian era in Britain.
Medical Practices[edit | edit source]
The Anglo-Scandinavian period saw a fusion of medical practices from both the Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian traditions. The Vikings brought with them knowledge of herbal remedies and surgical techniques, which were incorporated into the existing Anglo-Saxon medical practices.
Herbal remedies were a common form of treatment during this period. Plants such as yarrow, nettle, and mugwort were used for their medicinal properties. These herbs were often used in concoctions and salves to treat various ailments, from wounds to illnesses.
Surgical techniques during the Anglo-Scandinavian period were rudimentary by today's standards. However, archaeological evidence suggests that the Vikings had a relatively advanced understanding of surgery for their time. They used tools made from iron, bone, and wood for procedures such as trepanation and setting broken bones.
Impact on Modern Medicine[edit | edit source]
The Anglo-Scandinavian period had a lasting impact on medical practices in the British Isles. Many of the herbal remedies used during this time are still used in modern herbal medicine. Additionally, the surgical techniques developed during this period laid the groundwork for future advancements in surgery.
