Antiviral
Antiviral refers to a class of medications used specifically for treating viral infections. Unlike antibiotics, which target bacteria, antivirals are designed to inhibit the development and spread of viruses. Antivirals are a critical component in the management of viral diseases, including influenza, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and herpes simplex virus.
Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]
Antiviral drugs work by interfering with the virus's ability to replicate within the host cell. This can be achieved through various mechanisms:

Fusion inhibitors prevent the virus from fusing with the host cell membrane, thereby blocking entry into the cell. An example is enfuvirtide used in HIV treatment.

Integrase inhibitors block the viral enzyme integrase, which is necessary for the integration of viral DNA into the host genome. Examples include raltegravir and elvitegravir for HIV.

Antiviral drugs are used in the treatment and prevention of various viral infections:
- Influenza: Antivirals like oseltamivir and zanamivir are used to reduce the severity and duration of flu symptoms.
- HIV/AIDS: A combination of antiretroviral drugs is used to manage HIV infection and prevent the progression to AIDS.
- Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C: Antivirals such as tenofovir and sofosbuvir are used to treat chronic hepatitis infections.
- Herpes Simplex Virus: Acyclovir and valacyclovir are commonly used to manage herpes infections.

The development of antiviral drugs faces several challenges, including:
- Drug resistance: Viruses can mutate rapidly, leading to the development of resistance to existing antiviral drugs.
- Side effects: Antiviral drugs can have significant side effects, which may limit their use in certain populations.
- Cost: The high cost of antiviral drugs can be a barrier to access, particularly in low-income countries.
Future research is focused on developing new antiviral agents with broader activity, fewer side effects, and reduced potential for resistance. Advances in genomics and biotechnology are expected to play a crucial role in this endeavor.
