Batman: The Animated Series is an American animated television series based on the DC Comics superhero Batman. Developed by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, the series first aired on September 5, 1992, and concluded on September 15, 1995. It is known for its thematic complexity, darker tone, artistic quality, and modernization of its title character's crime-fighting origins.
Production[edit | edit source]
The series was produced by Warner Bros. Animation and originally aired on the Fox Kids network. The creators, Timm and Radomski, aimed to create a cartoon that was cinematic and appealed to a wide age range. They drew inspiration from 1940s film noir and used a distinctive art style, now referred to as "Dark Deco," which was developed by Radomski.

- Batman (Bruce Wayne) - Voiced by Kevin Conroy, he is the series' protagonist, fighting against crime and injustice in Gotham City.
- The Joker - Voiced by Mark Hamill, he is Batman's archenemy, known for his chaotic nature and dark humor.
- Robin (Dick Grayson) - Voiced by Loren Lester, he is Batman's loyal sidekick and partner.
- Alfred Pennyworth - Voiced by Efrem Zimbalist Jr., he is Bruce Wayne's faithful butler and confidant.
- Commissioner Gordon - Voiced by Robert Hastings, he is the Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department and an ally of Batman.

The series consists of 85 episodes over two seasons. Notable episodes include "Heart of Ice," which won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in an Animated Program, and "Almost Got 'Im," a fan-favorite that features several of Batman's enemies sharing stories about how they almost defeated him.
