Richard John "Dick" Grayson is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, and first appeared in Detective Comics #38 in April 1940. Grayson is best known as the original Robin, Batman's vigilante partner, and the first character to assume the Nightwing identity.

Fictional character biography[edit | edit source]

Early life[edit | edit source]

Dick Grayson was born to a family of acrobats known as the "Flying Graysons." He performed with his parents, John and Mary Grayson, at Haly's Circus. During a performance, his parents were murdered by a mobster named Tony Zucco, who had been extorting money from the circus. This tragedy led to Grayson being taken in by Bruce Wayne, who revealed his secret identity as Batman and trained Grayson to become his sidekick, Robin.

Robin[edit | edit source]

As Robin, Grayson became a founding member of the Teen Titans, a group of young superheroes. He served as the leader of the team and developed close relationships with other members, including Wally West (Kid Flash), Donna Troy (Wonder Girl), and Garth (Aqualad).

Nightwing[edit | edit source]

After many years as Robin, Grayson decided to establish his own identity separate from Batman. He adopted the persona of Nightwing, inspired by a legendary hero from the planet Krypton. As Nightwing, Grayson moved to the city of Blüdhaven, where he fought crime independently of Batman.

Batman[edit | edit source]

Grayson has temporarily taken on the mantle of Batman on several occasions, most notably after the apparent death of Bruce Wayne. During this time, he worked alongside Damian Wayne, Bruce's son, who became the new Robin.

Agent 37[edit | edit source]

In the Grayson series, Dick Grayson fakes his death and becomes a secret agent for the covert organization Spyral. Operating under the alias "Agent 37," he undertakes various espionage missions.

Powers and abilities[edit | edit source]

Dick Grayson possesses no superhuman abilities but is a highly skilled acrobat and martial artist. He is proficient in various forms of hand-to-hand combat and is an expert detective. Grayson is also a master of stealth and espionage techniques.

In other media[edit | edit source]

Dick Grayson has appeared in various television series, films, and video games. Notable portrayals include Burt Ward in the 1960s Batman TV series, Chris O'Donnell in the Batman Forever and Batman & Robin films, and Brenton Thwaites in the Titans TV series.
