Beer cheese (spread)
Beer cheese is a type of cheese spread that is most commonly found in the American state of Kentucky. The spread is traditionally made with beer, Cheddar cheese, and a variety of spices. It is often served with crackers, celery, or other types of snack foods.
History[edit | edit source]
The origins of beer cheese are traced back to Clark County, Kentucky in the 1940s. The spread was first served at a restaurant in Winchester, Kentucky called Johnny Allman's. The original recipe is said to have been created by the cousin of the restaurant's owner, Joe Allman. Since then, beer cheese has become a popular food item in the region and is celebrated annually at the Beer Cheese Festival in Winchester.
Preparation[edit | edit source]
Beer cheese is typically made by combining sharp cheddar cheese, beer, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and Cayenne pepper. The ingredients are blended together until the mixture becomes smooth. The type of beer used can vary, but traditionally, a strong dark beer is used to give the spread a robust flavor. The spread is usually served at room temperature.
Variations[edit | edit source]
There are many variations of beer cheese that can be found throughout the United States. Some versions use different types of cheese, such as Gouda or Blue, while others may add additional ingredients like onions or jalapenos. In some regions, beer cheese is used as a topping for burgers or served as a dip for pretzels.
