From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

The Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM) is Germany's largest institution for tropical medicine, located in Hamburg. It is a member of the Leibniz Association. The institute was founded in response to the cholera epidemic of 1892 and has since been dedicated to researching tropical diseases and training medical professionals. The institute's research is divided into three sections: Molecular Biology and Immunology, Clinical Research, and Epidemiology and Diagnostics. The National Reference Centre for Tropical Pathogens is also located at BNITM. The institute merged into the Leibniz Association in 2008. The building itself, designed by Fritz Schumacher, was constructed between 1910 and 1914 and has undergone renovations and expansions over the years. Today, it houses high-security laboratories that are among the safest in the world. The Bernhard Nocht Institute continues to play a crucial role in the study and prevention of tropical diseases, with a dedicated team of about 250 researchers and medical professionals.
