Beta-Nitrostyrene
Beta-Nitrostyrene is an organic compound with the chemical formula C8H7NO2. It is a yellow crystalline solid that is soluble in most organic solvents. Beta-Nitrostyrene is used as a precursor in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals and other organic compounds.
Chemical Structure[edit | edit source]
Beta-Nitrostyrene consists of a benzene ring attached to a vinyl group (C=C) and a nitro group (NO2). The nitro group is attached to the beta carbon of the vinyl group, hence the name Beta-Nitrostyrene.
Synthesis[edit | edit source]
Beta-Nitrostyrene can be synthesized by the condensation reaction of benzaldehyde and nitromethane in the presence of a base such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH). This reaction is known as the Henry reaction.
Applications[edit | edit source]
Beta-Nitrostyrene is used as a precursor in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals and other organic compounds. It is also used in the production of dyes and plastics.
Safety[edit | edit source]
Beta-Nitrostyrene is a potential skin and eye irritant. It should be handled with care, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
