From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellnesspedia

Betamethasone phosphate is a glucocorticoid medication used to treat a variety of medical conditions. It is a synthetic corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Betamethasone phosphate works by decreasing inflammation and modifying the body's immune response. It binds to and activates the glucocorticoid receptor, a type of nuclear receptor that is present inside most cells. This leads to changes in gene expression, which results in a wide range of effects.

Medical uses[edit | edit source]

Betamethasone phosphate is used to treat many different conditions such as allergic disorders, skin conditions, ulcerative colitis, arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, or breathing disorders. It is also used to treat certain types of cancer.

Side effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of betamethasone phosphate include skin irritation, burning, redness, and dryness. More serious side effects can include high blood sugar, weight gain, osteoporosis, glaucoma, and cataracts.

Contraindications[edit | edit source]

Betamethasone phosphate should not be used by people with certain medical conditions, such as systemic fungal infections or certain types of viral infections. It should also be used with caution in people with certain other conditions, such as diabetes or osteoporosis.
