Brisbane is the capital city of the state of Queensland, Australia. It is the third-most populous city in Australia, with a metropolitan population of approximately 2.56 million people. Brisbane is known for its vibrant culture, subtropical climate, and as a gateway to the famous Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.

Brisbane was named after the Brisbane River on which it is located, which in turn was named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, the Governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825. The area was originally inhabited by the Turrbal and Jagera peoples. European settlement began in 1824 as a penal colony at Redcliffe, 28 kilometres north of the central business district, but was soon moved to the current site of the Brisbane CBD.

Brisbane is situated on the Brisbane River, approximately 15 kilometres from its mouth at Moreton Bay. The city is built on a low-lying floodplain, with the Great Dividing Range to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east. The city is characterized by its hilly terrain and the Brisbane River, which meanders through the city.
