Buell Hall
Buell Hall is a historic building located on the Morningside Heights campus of Columbia University in New York City. It is one of the oldest buildings on the campus and serves as a significant landmark within the university.
History[edit | edit source]
Buell Hall was originally constructed in 1885 and was designed by the architectural firm McKim, Mead & White. The building was initially used as the Bloomingdale Insane Asylum's administrative building before the asylum was relocated and the land was acquired by Columbia University.
Architecture[edit | edit source]
The architectural style of Buell Hall is Romanesque Revival, characterized by its robust and sturdy appearance, with rounded arches and a symmetrical facade. The building is constructed primarily of red brick with stone trim, which is typical of the period's architectural design.
Current Use[edit | edit source]
Today, Buell Hall houses the Maison Française, an academic and cultural center dedicated to the study of French and Francophone cultures. The Maison Française hosts a variety of events, including lectures, film screenings, and conferences, fostering a vibrant intellectual community within Columbia University.
Significance[edit | edit source]
Buell Hall is not only significant for its architectural beauty but also for its historical importance. It stands as a testament to the university's long-standing commitment to preserving its heritage while adapting to contemporary academic needs.
