Butyl propionate

Butyl propionate, also known as butyl propanoate, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C7H14O2. It is a member of the ester family, compounds formed by the reaction of an acid and an alcohol with the elimination of water. Butyl propionate is produced by the esterification of butanol with propionic acid. This process involves the removal of water to form the ester bond. It is a clear liquid that is insoluble in water but soluble in most organic solvents such as ethanol, diethyl ether, and benzene.

Butyl propionate has a fruity odor, which makes it a valuable ingredient in the flavor and fragrance industry. It is used to impart pineapple, apple, and berry flavors in various food products. Additionally, due to its pleasant smell, it is also used in the production of perfumes and cosmetics. The compound has a boiling point of approximately 145°C and a molecular weight of 130.18 g/mol.
