Carl Sciortino

Carl Michael Sciortino Jr. (born July 6, 1978) is an American politician who served as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He represented the 34th Middlesex district from 2005 to 2014. Sciortino is a member of the Democratic Party.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Sciortino was born in Medford, Massachusetts. He attended Tufts University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. He later pursued a Master of Public Administration at the Harvard Kennedy School.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Sciortino was first elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 2004, defeating incumbent Vincent Ciampa in the Democratic primary. He was re-elected in subsequent elections until his resignation in 2014.

During his tenure, Sciortino was known for his advocacy on issues such as LGBT rights, healthcare, and public transportation. He was a co-sponsor of the Transgender Equal Rights Bill, which was signed into law in 2011.

In 2013, Sciortino announced his candidacy for the United States House of Representatives in the special election to succeed Ed Markey in Massachusetts's 5th congressional district. He finished fourth in the Democratic primary.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Sciortino is openly gay and has been an advocate for LGBT rights throughout his career. He married his partner, Pem Brown, in 2013.

Resignation and later career[edit | edit source]

In 2014, Sciortino resigned from the Massachusetts House of Representatives to become the executive director of the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts, a position he held until 2018.
