- Cherokee County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of the 2010 census, the population was 46,987. Its county seat is Tahlequah, which is also the capital of the Cherokee Nation.
Geography[edit | edit source]
- Cherokee County is located in the northeastern part of Oklahoma, and it is named after the Cherokee Indians who established Tahlequah as the capital of the Cherokee Nation in 1839. The county is bordered by Delaware County to the north, Adair County to the east, Sequoyah County to the south, and Muskogee County and Wagoner County to the west.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
- According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 776 square miles, of which 749 square miles is land and 27 square miles is water. The racial makeup of the county was 70.6% White, 0.8% Black or African American, 22.6% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 5.0% from two or more races. 2.1% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
