DATRI
DATRI is a non-profit organization based in India that operates as a registry for blood stem cells donors. Founded in 2009, DATRI's mission is to save the lives of those suffering from life-threatening blood disorders like leukemia, thalassemia, aplastic anemia, and other immunodeficiency disorders. It is one of the largest stem cell donor registries in India and has been instrumental in facilitating stem cell donations across the country and abroad.
History[edit | edit source]
DATRI was established with the aim of bridging the gap between patients requiring hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and potential stem cell donors. The organization was co-founded by Raghu Rajagopal, Dr. Nezih Cereb, and Dr. Soo Young Yang, who were motivated by the lack of a centralized stem cell donor registry in India that could cater to the diverse genetic background of the Indian population.
Mission and Vision[edit | edit source]
The primary mission of DATRI is to significantly increase the number of registered stem cell donors in India, thereby increasing the chances of finding matching donors for patients in need of a stem cell transplant. Its vision encompasses not only the expansion of the donor registry but also raising awareness about blood disorders and the importance of stem cell donation.
Operations[edit | edit source]
DATRI operates by conducting awareness campaigns and registration drives across various locations, including colleges, corporate offices, and public spaces. Individuals interested in becoming donors can register with DATRI by providing a sample of their DNA, typically collected through a cheek swab. This DNA is then analyzed, and the individual's HLA typing information is stored in DATRI's database. When a patient requires a stem cell transplant, their HLA type is matched against the database to find a potential donor.
Achievements[edit | edit source]
Since its inception, DATRI has registered a significant number of potential stem cell donors and has facilitated numerous successful stem cell transplants. The organization's efforts have not only saved lives but have also increased awareness about stem cell donation in India.
Challenges[edit | edit source]
Despite its achievements, DATRI faces several challenges, including the need for increased awareness about stem cell donation among the general population, overcoming myths and misconceptions related to stem cell donation, and the need for more funding to support its operations.
Future Directions[edit | edit source]
DATRI aims to continue expanding its donor registry and to work towards making stem cell transplants accessible to a larger number of patients. The organization also focuses on research and collaborations to improve the outcomes of stem cell transplants.
