David J. Skorton is an American cardiologist, academic, and nonprofit executive. He has held several prominent positions in academia and the nonprofit sector, including serving as the 13th Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

David J. Skorton was born on November 22, 1949, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Northwestern University in 1970 and his M.D. from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in 1974.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

Skorton completed his medical residency and fellowship in cardiology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He later joined the faculty at the University of Iowa, where he became a professor in the departments of Internal Medicine, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering.

Academic Leadership[edit | edit source]

In 2003, Skorton was appointed as the 10th President of the University of Iowa. During his tenure, he focused on diversity, research, and public health initiatives. In 2006, he became the 12th President of Cornell University, where he served until 2015. At Cornell, he emphasized interdisciplinary research, global engagement, and the establishment of the Cornell Tech campus in New York City.

Smithsonian Institution[edit | edit source]

In 2015, Skorton was appointed as the 13th Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, where he oversaw the world's largest museum, education, and research complex. He focused on expanding the institution's digital presence and enhancing its educational outreach.

Nonprofit Sector[edit | edit source]

After leaving the Smithsonian in 2019, Skorton became the President and CEO of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), where he continues to advocate for medical education and healthcare policy.

David J. Skorton is married to Robin Davisson, a professor of molecular physiology.

Skorton has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to medicine, education, and public service. He is a member of several prestigious organizations, including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine.
