Dimethyl methylphosphonate

From WikiMD's WELLNESSPEDIA

Dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C3H9O3P. It is a colorless liquid, which is primarily used as a flame retardant, plasticizer, and antifoam agent. DMMP is also used in the production of organophosphorus compounds and as a simulant for nerve gases due to its similar physical properties.

Chemical Properties[edit]

DMMP has a molecular weight of 124.08 g/mol. It is a colorless, odorless liquid at room temperature. The compound has a boiling point of 181°C and a melting point of -50°C. It is soluble in water and most organic solvents.

Uses[edit]

DMMP is used in a variety of applications. It is a common flame retardant in materials such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyurethane foams. It is also used as a plasticizer in the production of plastics and rubber.

In addition, DMMP is used as an antifoam agent in industrial processes to prevent the formation of foam. It is also used in the production of organophosphorus compounds, which are used in a variety of applications including pesticides, flame retardants, and plasticizers.

DMMP is also used as a simulant for nerve gases due to its similar physical properties. This makes it useful in the testing and development of chemical warfare detection and protection equipment.

Safety[edit]

DMMP is considered to be of low toxicity. However, it can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Prolonged exposure can lead to more serious health effects such as nausea, headache, and dizziness. It is recommended to use proper protective equipment when handling DMMP.
