Dov Yosef (born Bernard Joseph; 27 May 1899 – 7 January 1980) was an Israeli politician, lawyer, and government minister. He played a significant role in the early years of the State of Israel and held several key positions in the Israeli government.

Early Life and Education

Dov Yosef was born in Montreal, Canada, to a Jewish family. He studied law at McGill University and later continued his studies at the University of London. After completing his education, he immigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1918, where he became involved in the Zionist movement.

Political Career

Yosef was an active member of the Haganah, the Jewish paramilitary organization, and played a crucial role in the defense of the Jewish community during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. He was appointed as the Military Governor of Jerusalem during the siege of the city.

Ministerial Roles

Dov Yosef held several ministerial positions in the Israeli government. He served as the Minister of Rationing and Supply, where he was responsible for managing the rationing system during the early years of the state. He also served as the Minister of Justice, Minister of Development, and Minister of Health.

As the Minister of Rationing and Supply, Yosef implemented a strict rationing system to ensure the fair distribution of scarce resources during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and the subsequent period of austerity.

Minister of Justice

In his role as Minister of Justice, Yosef was involved in the establishment of the legal framework of the new state. He worked on the integration of various legal systems that existed in Mandatory Palestine into a unified Israeli legal system.

Minister of Development
