Epidemiology of chikungunya
Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes. The disease is characterized by an abrupt onset of fever frequently accompanied by severe joint pain. Other common signs and symptoms include muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue, and rash.
Transmission[edit | edit source]
Chikungunya is primarily transmitted by two species of mosquitoes: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. These mosquitoes are also vectors for other diseases such as dengue fever and Zika virus. The virus is maintained in nature through a cycle involving mosquitoes and vertebrate hosts, primarily primates.

Chikungunya was first identified in Tanzania in 1952. Since then, outbreaks have been reported in various parts of Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. The disease has become a significant public health concern in many tropical and subtropical regions.

There is no specific antiviral treatment for chikungunya. Management is primarily supportive and includes rest, fluids, and medications to relieve fever and pain, such as paracetamol and ibuprofen. Severe cases may require hospitalization.
Prevention[edit | edit source]
Preventive measures focus on reducing mosquito exposure. This includes the use of insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and using mosquito nets. Efforts to control mosquito populations, such as eliminating standing water where mosquitoes breed, are also crucial.
