Eric D. Green

Eric D. Green is an American neurologist and geneticist. He is best known for his contributions to the Human Genome Project and for his role as the director of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Green was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Bacteriology. He then went on to earn his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Washington University in St. Louis.

Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his education, Green joined the NIH in 1994. He played a significant role in the Human Genome Project, an international research effort to determine the sequence of the human genome and identify the genes that it contains. He was appointed the director of the NHGRI in 2009, a position he still holds today.

As the director of the NHGRI, Green oversees the institute's efforts to advance genome research and its application to health and disease. He also leads the institute's efforts to promote the integration of genomics into medical practice.

Green's research focuses on the application of genomic technologies to understand the genetic basis of human disease. He has made significant contributions to the field of genomics, including the development of new methods for analyzing DNA sequence data and the identification of genes associated with various diseases.

Green has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the field of genomics. These include the Cotlove Award from the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists and the William Allan Award from the American Society of Human Genetics.
