Ernest Maurice "Ernie" Vandeweghe Jr. (September 12, 1928 – November 8, 2014) was an American professional basketball player and physician. He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the New York Knicks.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Vandeweghe was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and grew up in Oceanside, New York. He attended Oceanside High School, where he excelled in basketball. He went on to attend Colgate University, where he played for the Colgate Raiders from 1945 to 1949.
Professional career[edit | edit source]
Vandeweghe was selected by the New York Knicks in the first round of the 1949 NBA draft with the ninth overall pick. He played as a shooting guard for the Knicks from 1949 to 1956. During his career, he averaged 9.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game.
Medical career[edit | edit source]
After retiring from professional basketball, Vandeweghe pursued a career in medicine. He earned his medical degree and became a practicing physician. He also served as the team physician for the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Rams.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Vandeweghe was married to Colleen Kay Hutchins, who was Miss America 1952. They had four children, including Kiki Vandeweghe, who also played in the NBA, and Tauna Vandeweghe, an Olympic swimmer. His granddaughter, Coco Vandeweghe, is a professional tennis player.
