Estradiol decanoate

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Estradiol decanoate is a synthetic, steroidal estrogen and an estrogen ester, specifically the C17β decanoate ester of estradiol. It is used in hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms and low estrogen levels in women.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

As an estrogen, estradiol decanoate has similar effects in the body as natural estradiol. It binds to and activates the estrogen receptor, which leads to changes in gene expression and produces the characteristic effects of estrogen.

Medical uses[edit | edit source]

Estradiol decanoate is used in hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and mood swings. It is also used to treat low estrogen levels in women who have had their ovaries removed or who are otherwise unable to produce enough estrogen.

Side effects[edit | edit source]

Like all estrogens, estradiol decanoate can have side effects. These can include nausea, bloating, breast tenderness, and an increased risk of blood clots and stroke.
