Ethinylestradiol benzoate

From WikiMD's WELLNESSPEDIA

Ethinylestradiol benzoate is a synthetic, steroidal estrogen that is derived from estradiol. It is a long-acting estrogen, and is an estrogen ester, specifically, the 3-benzoate ester of ethinylestradiol. Ethinylestradiol benzoate is used in medicine for hormone therapy.

Pharmacology[edit]

As a form of estrogen, ethinylestradiol benzoate binds to and activates the estrogen receptor, a type of nuclear receptor that is activated by the hormone estrogen. This results in changes in gene expression which can lead to a variety of effects, including the development of female secondary sexual characteristics and the regulation of the menstrual cycle.

Medical uses[edit]

Ethinylestradiol benzoate is used in hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms, hypogonadism, prostate cancer, and for other conditions. It is also used in hormonal contraception, specifically in combination with a progestogen.

Side effects[edit]

Like all estrogens, ethinylestradiol benzoate has a number of potential side effects. These can include nausea, breast tenderness, fluid retention, and an increased risk of thrombosis. It can also cause changes in mood and libido.
