Finnish Red Cross (Suomen Punainen Risti in Finnish) is a humanitarian organization and a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. It was established in Finland in 1877, making it one of the oldest Red Cross organizations in the world. The Finnish Red Cross is dedicated to providing assistance to those in need, regardless of nationality, race, religious beliefs, class, or political opinions. Its mission encompasses a wide range of activities including disaster relief, health and social services, and the promotion of health and safety practices.

History[edit | edit source]

The Finnish Red Cross was founded on the principles laid out by Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, following his experiences at the Battle of Solferino in 1859. The Finnish organization was officially established in 1877, and it played a significant role in providing care for the wounded and sick during various conflicts, including the Finnish Civil War in 1918 and the Winter and Continuation Wars during World War II.

Activities[edit | edit source]

The activities of the Finnish Red Cross are diverse and tailored to meet the changing needs of society. They include:

  • Disaster Preparedness and Response: The organization plays a crucial role in preparing for and responding to disasters, both natural and man-made, in Finland and internationally. This includes providing emergency shelters, first aid, and psychological support to those affected.
  • Health and Social Services: The Finnish Red Cross offers a variety of health and social services, including blood donation services through the Blood Service, first aid training, and support for refugees and immigrants.
  • Volunteering: Volunteering is at the heart of the Finnish Red Cross. Thousands of volunteers across Finland contribute their time and skills to support the organization's activities, from disaster response to social services.
  • Youth Activities: The organization also focuses on engaging youth through education and activities that promote humanitarian values and principles.

Organization[edit | edit source]

The Finnish Red Cross is organized into several regional and local chapters across Finland, allowing it to effectively respond to the needs of different communities. It operates under the guidance of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and adheres to the seven fundamental principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality.

International Cooperation[edit | edit source]

In addition to its domestic activities, the Finnish Red Cross is actively involved in international humanitarian efforts. It collaborates with other Red Cross and Red Crescent societies to provide relief in crisis situations around the world and participates in development projects aimed at improving health, water and sanitation, and disaster preparedness in vulnerable communities.

Funding[edit | edit source]

The Finnish Red Cross is funded through a combination of membership fees, donations, and revenue from its services, such as the Blood Service. It also receives support from the Finnish government for specific projects.
