Focal lung pneumatosis is a rare pulmonary condition characterized by the presence of localized collections of air within the lung parenchyma. This condition can be identified through imaging techniques such as chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT) scans.
Etiology[edit | edit source]
The exact cause of focal lung pneumatosis is not well understood. However, it is often associated with underlying lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and pulmonary fibrosis. It can also occur due to trauma, infections, or as a complication of certain medical procedures like bronchoscopy.
Pathophysiology[edit | edit source]
Focal lung pneumatosis involves the formation of air-filled cysts or cavities within the lung tissue. These air pockets can result from the rupture of alveoli, leading to the escape of air into the interstitial spaces. The condition can be asymptomatic or present with symptoms depending on the size and location of the air collections.

Patients with focal lung pneumatosis may be asymptomatic or present with symptoms such as:
- Dyspnea (shortness of breath)
- Chest pain
- Cough
- Hemoptysis (coughing up blood)
