Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) is a premier medical education institution located in Guwahati, Assam, India. Established in 1960, it is one of the oldest and most prestigious medical colleges in the North East region of India.

The foundation of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital was laid by the then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, on 20th October 1955. The college started functioning from 1960 with the admission of 40 students. Over the years, the college has grown into a premier institution for medical education and research in the region.

Campus[edit | edit source]

The campus of GMCH is spread over an area of 24 acres. It houses the administrative block, academic buildings, hospital, hostels, and residential quarters for the staff. The campus also has a well-equipped library, sports facilities, and a canteen.

GMCH offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in various disciplines of medicine and allied sciences. The college is affiliated to the Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences and is recognized by the Medical Council of India.

The Gauhati Medical College Hospital is a 1200-bedded multi-specialty hospital. It provides healthcare services in various specialties including Cardiology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, and Nephrology. The hospital also has a well-equipped Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit.

GMCH has a strong focus on research. The college has several research projects funded by national and international agencies. The research activities are carried out in collaboration with various reputed institutions and universities.
