Gegard Mousasi (born August 1, 1985) is a Dutch professional mixed martial artist and former kickboxer. He is currently signed to Bellator MMA, where he has competed in the Middleweight division. Mousasi is a former Bellator Middleweight World Champion and has also competed in UFC, Strikeforce, Dream, and Pride FC.

Early life[edit | edit source]

Mousasi was born in Tehran, Iran, to Armenian parents. His family moved to the Netherlands when he was four years old. He began training in judo at the age of eight and later transitioned to boxing and kickboxing.

Mixed martial arts career[edit | edit source]

Mousasi made his professional MMA debut in 2003. He quickly gained recognition for his well-rounded skills and fighting style, which combines elements of boxing, kickboxing, and judo.

Dream and Strikeforce[edit | edit source]

Mousasi achieved significant success in the Dream promotion, where he won the Middleweight Grand Prix in 2008. He later signed with Strikeforce, where he became the Light Heavyweight Champion by defeating Renato Sobral.

Ultimate Fighting Championship[edit | edit source]

In 2013, Mousasi signed with the UFC. He made his debut against Ilir Latifi, winning by unanimous decision. During his time in the UFC, Mousasi fought notable opponents such as Lyoto Machida, Chris Weidman, and Vitor Belfort.

Bellator MMA[edit | edit source]

Mousasi signed with Bellator MMA in 2017. He won the Bellator Middleweight World Championship by defeating Rafael Carvalho and successfully defended his title against Rory MacDonald.

Mousasi resides in Leiden, Netherlands. He is known for his calm demeanor and analytical approach to fighting.
