Granulocytic sarcoma
Granulocytic sarcoma (also known as chloroma, myeloid sarcoma or extramedullary myeloid tumor) is a rare type of cancer that involves the immune system. It is a solid tumor composed of immature white blood cells called myeloblasts. Granulocytic sarcoma is often associated with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), but it can also occur in people with other myeloproliferative disorders or in people without any other hematologic abnormalities.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
The symptoms of granulocytic sarcoma can vary widely depending on the location of the tumor. Common symptoms can include pain, swelling, or a palpable mass. If the tumor is in the central nervous system, it can cause neurological symptoms such as headache, seizures, or focal neurological deficits. If the tumor is in the gastrointestinal tract, it can cause abdominal pain, bleeding, or obstruction.
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
The diagnosis of granulocytic sarcoma can be challenging because the symptoms can be nonspecific and the tumor can occur in any part of the body. The diagnosis is usually confirmed by a biopsy of the tumor. The biopsy sample is examined under a microscope to look for the characteristic immature white blood cells. Other tests such as imaging studies and blood tests may also be used to help make the diagnosis.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
The treatment of granulocytic sarcoma typically involves chemotherapy to kill the cancer cells. In some cases, radiation therapy or surgery may also be used. The choice of treatment depends on many factors, including the patient's overall health, the location and size of the tumor, and whether the patient has any other hematologic abnormalities.
Prognosis[edit | edit source]
The prognosis for granulocytic sarcoma can vary widely depending on many factors, including the patient's overall health, the location and size of the tumor, and whether the patient has any other hematologic abnormalities. In general, the prognosis is better for patients who are diagnosed early and receive prompt treatment.
