HMAS Brisbane
HMAS Brisbane is a Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Adelaide-class frigate named after the city of Brisbane, Queensland. The ship was commissioned in 1980 and decommissioned in 2001, serving in various operations both domestically and internationally.
Design and Construction[edit | edit source]
HMAS Brisbane was one of six Adelaide-class frigates built for the RAN. The design was based on the United States Navy's Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate, with modifications to meet Australian requirements. The ship was built by Defence Materiel Organisation at the Williamstown Dockyard in Victoria.
Operational History[edit | edit source]
During her service, HMAS Brisbane was deployed in several operations. In 1990, she was deployed to the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Desert Shield, enforcing sanctions against Iraq. In 1999, she was part of the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET), providing humanitarian assistance and security in East Timor.
Decommissioning and Fate[edit | edit source]
HMAS Brisbane was decommissioned in 2001. In 2005, the ship was scuttled off the coast of Sunshine Coast to create an artificial reef and dive site.
