Hackensack

Hackensack is a city in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city's population was 43,010, reflecting an increase of 333 (+0.8%) from the 42,677 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 5,628 (+15.2%) from the 37,049 counted in the 1990 Census.

History

Hackensack was first settled by the Lenape Native Americans, and was later colonized by Dutch settlers in the 17th century. The city's name is derived from the Lenape word Achinigeu-hach, or Ackingsah-sack, meaning "stony ground".

Geography

Located approximately 12 miles northwest of New York City, Hackensack is part of the New York metropolitan area. The city is bordered by the towns of Teaneck, Bogota, South Hackensack, Maywood, and River Edge.

Economy

Hackensack's economy is diverse, with a large healthcare sector. The city is home to Hackensack University Medical Center, one of the largest healthcare providers in the state. Other major employers include the Hackensack School District and the County of Bergen.

Education

The Hackensack Public Schools serve students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The district is one of 31 former Abbott districts statewide, which are now referred to as "SDA Districts" based on the requirement for the state to cover all costs for school building and renovation projects in these districts under the supervision of the New Jersey Schools Development Authority.

Transportation

Hackensack is served by numerous highways, including Interstate 80, Route 4, and Route 17. The city also has a station on New Jersey Transit's Pascack Valley Line, providing rail service to Hoboken Terminal.

Notable people

Numerous notable individuals were born or have lived in Hackensack, including James J. Braddock, the heavyweight boxing champion, and Richard E. Byrd, the polar explorer.
