Harold Horace Hopkins (6 December 1918 – 22 October 1994) was a British physicist and engineer who made significant contributions to the field of optics and medical imaging. He is best known for his pioneering work in the development of fiber optics and endoscopy.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Harold Hopkins was born in Leicester, England. He attended Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys and later studied at University College, Leicester, where he earned a first-class degree in physics. He then went on to complete his PhD at Imperial College London under the supervision of George William Series.

Career and Research[edit | edit source]

Hopkins began his career as a lecturer at Imperial College London and later became a professor at the University of Reading. His research focused on the development of optical systems, and he made groundbreaking advancements in the field of fiber optics.

Hopkins' work in fiber optics led to the development of flexible fiberscopes, which revolutionized the field of endoscopy. His innovations allowed for the creation of thin, flexible tubes that could transmit light and images, enabling doctors to see inside the human body without invasive surgery.
