The Hipster PDA (Parietal Disgorgement Aid) is a do-it-yourself paper-based personal organizer, popularized by Merlin Mann in 2004. It is a low-tech alternative to digital personal organizers and personal digital assistants (PDAs). The Hipster PDA consists of a stack of index cards held together with a binder clip, and it can be used for note-taking, task management, and personal organization.

History[edit | edit source]

The term "Hipster PDA" was coined by Merlin Mann, a writer and productivity expert, in a blog post on his website, 43 Folders. The concept was introduced as a tongue-in-cheek response to the increasing complexity and cost of digital PDAs. Mann suggested that a simple stack of index cards could serve the same purpose as expensive electronic devices, with the added benefits of being cheap, flexible, and not requiring batteries.

Components[edit | edit source]

The basic components of a Hipster PDA include:

  • Index cards: Typically 3x5 inch cards, which can be plain, lined, or grid-patterned.
  • Binder clip: Used to hold the stack of index cards together.
  • Pen or pencil: For writing on the index cards.

Optional components may include:

Usage[edit | edit source]

The Hipster PDA can be used in various ways, depending on the user's needs. Common uses include:

  • To-do lists: Writing down tasks and checking them off as they are completed.
  • Calendar: Keeping track of appointments and deadlines.
  • Notes: Jotting down ideas, meeting notes, or other information.
  • Project management: Organizing tasks and information related to specific projects.

Users can customize their Hipster PDA by adding or removing cards, creating their own templates, or using different colors for different categories.

Advantages[edit | edit source]

The Hipster PDA offers several advantages over digital PDAs and other electronic devices:

  • Simplicity: Easy to use and requires no technical knowledge.
  • Cost: Inexpensive compared to digital devices.
  • Flexibility: Can be customized to suit individual needs.
  • Durability: Not affected by battery life or technical malfunctions.
  • Portability: Lightweight and easy to carry.

Criticism[edit | edit source]

Despite its advantages, the Hipster PDA has some limitations:

  • Storage: Limited capacity compared to digital devices.
  • Searchability: No built-in search function, making it harder to find specific information.
  • Environmental impact: Use of paper may be seen as less environmentally friendly compared to digital alternatives.
