Jean Smart (born September 13, 1951) is an American actress known for her versatile work in television, film, and theater. She has received numerous accolades, including four Primetime Emmy Awards and two Tony Award nominations.

Jean Elizabeth Smart was born in Seattle, Washington. She is the second of four children. Smart discovered her passion for acting while attending Ballard High School. She later graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in fine arts.

Jean Smart's breakthrough role came in 1986 when she was cast as Charlene Frazier Stillfield on the popular sitcom Designing Women. She remained with the show until 1991. Smart's performance earned her critical acclaim and established her as a household name.
In the 2000s, Smart appeared in several notable television series. She won two Primetime Emmy Awards for her role as Lana Gardener in Frasier and another for her portrayal of Regina Newley in Samantha Who?. More recently, she has been praised for her roles in Fargo, Legion, and Watchmen.
