José Gomes Temporão
José Gomes Temporão (born October 20, 1951) is a Brazilian physician and public health expert who served as the Minister of Health of Brazil from March 16, 2007, to December 31, 2010, under the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Temporão was born in Porto, Portugal, and later moved to Brazil with his family. He pursued his medical degree at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), where he specialized in public health and epidemiology. He furthered his studies with a master's degree in public health from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz).
Career[edit | edit source]
Before his appointment as Minister of Health, Temporão held various positions within the Brazilian public health sector. He worked at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), where he contributed to numerous research projects and public health initiatives. He also served as the director of the National Cancer Institute (INCA) and was involved in the development of national health policies.
Minister of Health[edit | edit source]
As Minister of Health, Temporão focused on several key areas, including the expansion of the Unified Health System (SUS), the promotion of preventive healthcare, and the fight against infectious diseases such as dengue fever and HIV/AIDS. He was also an advocate for the Family Health Program (PSF) and worked to improve access to healthcare services for underserved populations.
During his tenure, Temporão faced challenges such as the H1N1 influenza pandemic and worked to ensure the availability of vaccines and antiviral medications. He also promoted campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of vaccination and other preventive measures.
Post-Ministerial Career[edit | edit source]
After leaving the Ministry of Health, Temporão continued to be active in the field of public health. He has been involved in various research projects and has served as a consultant for international health organizations. He remains a prominent figure in the Brazilian public health community.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Temporão is married and has children. He continues to reside in Brazil and remains dedicated to improving public health policies and practices.
