Karen Holbrook
Karen A. Holbrook is an American academic administrator and biologist. She has held several prominent positions in higher education, including serving as the President of Ohio State University and the Interim President of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Karen Holbrook was born in Des Moines, Iowa. She earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in zoology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She later received her Ph.D. in biological structure from the University of Washington.
Academic Career[edit | edit source]
Holbrook began her academic career as a research scientist and professor at the University of Washington. She later joined the faculty at the University of Florida, where she served as the Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation.
Ohio State University[edit | edit source]
In 2002, Holbrook became the 13th President of Ohio State University. During her tenure, she focused on enhancing the university's research capabilities, improving student life, and increasing diversity on campus. She served as president until 2007.
University of South Florida[edit | edit source]
After leaving Ohio State, Holbrook joined the University of South Florida as the Senior Vice President for Global Affairs and International Research. She played a key role in expanding the university's international programs and partnerships.
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University[edit | edit source]
In 2017, Holbrook was appointed as the Interim President of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. She served in this role until a permanent president was appointed.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Holbrook is married to Jim Holbrook, a retired physician. They have one son.
