Kenneth P. Moritsugu
Kenneth P. Moritsugu is an American physician and public health administrator who served as the Acting Surgeon General of the United States from 2006 to 2007. He is known for his contributions to public health policy and his advocacy for organ donation.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Kenneth P. Moritsugu was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Hawaii and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences. He also holds a Master of Public Health degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

Public Health Service[edit | edit source]
Moritsugu joined the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps in 1968. Over the years, he held various positions within the Department of Health and Human Services, including roles in the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Acting Surgeon General[edit | edit source]
In 2006, Moritsugu was appointed as the Acting Surgeon General of the United States following the resignation of Richard Carmona. He served in this capacity until 2007, when Steven K. Galson succeeded him. During his tenure, Moritsugu focused on issues such as obesity, tobacco use, and emergency preparedness.
Advocacy for Organ Donation[edit | edit source]
Moritsugu is a strong advocate for organ donation, a cause that became personal after the tragic deaths of his wife and daughter, both of whom were organ donors. He has worked with various organizations to promote awareness and education about the importance of organ donation.

Moritsugu has received numerous awards for his service and contributions to public health, including the Surgeon General's Medallion and the Public Health Service Distinguished Service Medal.
