Lassa

Lassa is a town in Nigeria known for the Lassa fever, a viral disease named after it. The town is located in the Askira/Uba local government area of Borno State.

Lassa was founded by a hunter named Bulama Guduf, who was a member of the Kanuri ethnic group. The town was named after a local plant known as "Lassa" in the Kanuri language.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Lassa is located in the northeastern part of Nigeria, in the Borno State. It is part of the Askira/Uba local government area. The town is surrounded by a number of hills, which provide a natural defense against invasions.

Lassa Fever[edit | edit source]

Lassa is known for the Lassa fever, a viral disease that was first identified in the town in 1969. The disease is caused by the Lassa virus, which is transmitted to humans from rodents. The disease is endemic in parts of West Africa, including Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea, and Nigeria.
