Lawrence David Brown (December 16, 1940 – February 21, 2018) was an American statistician and a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. He made significant contributions to the fields of decision theory, nonparametric statistics, and empirical Bayes methods.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Lawrence D. Brown was born in Los Angeles, California. He completed his undergraduate studies at California Institute of Technology and earned his Ph.D. in statistics from Cornell University in 1964 under the supervision of Jack Kiefer.

Career[edit | edit source]

Brown began his academic career at University of California, Berkeley, and later moved to Cornell University. In 1994, he joined the faculty of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he remained until his death.

Contributions to Statistics[edit | edit source]

Brown's work in decision theory is highly regarded, particularly his contributions to the development of admissible estimators and shrinkage estimators. He also made significant advances in nonparametric statistics and empirical Bayes methods, which have had a lasting impact on the field.

Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]

In 1986, Brown was awarded the COPSS Presidents' Award, one of the highest honors in the field of statistics. He was also a fellow of the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Brown was married and had two children. He passed away on February 21, 2018, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
