List of women neuroscientists
This is a list of notable women neuroscientists, who have made significant contributions to the field of neuroscience. Neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system, a branch of biology that deals with the anatomy, biochemistry, molecular biology, and physiology of neurons and neural circuits.
Notable Women Neuroscientists[edit | edit source]
- Rita Levi-Montalcini - An Italian neurobiologist who, along with Stanley Cohen, received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1986 for their discovery of nerve growth factor (NGF).
- Brenda Milner - A British-Canadian neuropsychologist who is a pioneer in the field of clinical neuropsychology. She is best known for her work with patient H.M., which provided insight into the role of the hippocampus in memory.
- Ann McKee - An American neuropathologist known for her research on chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and the effects of repetitive head trauma on the brain.
- Nancy Kanwisher - An American cognitive neuroscientist who has made significant contributions to the understanding of the functional organization of the human brain, particularly in the areas of face perception and visual recognition.
- Eve Marder - An American neuroscientist recognized for her work on the stomatogastric ganglion of crustaceans, which has provided insights into the principles of neural circuit function and plasticity.
- Carla Shatz - An American neurobiologist known for her research on the development of the visual system and the role of neural activity in the formation of neural circuits.
- May-Britt Moser - A Norwegian neuroscientist who, along with her husband Edvard Moser, received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2014 for their discoveries of cells that constitute a positioning system in the brain, known as the grid cells.
- Cornelia Bargmann - An American neurobiologist who has made significant contributions to the understanding of the genetic and neural mechanisms underlying behavior in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans.
- Suzanne Corkin - An American neuroscientist known for her extensive work on the cognitive and neural mechanisms of memory, particularly through her studies of patient H.M..
- Huda Zoghbi - A Lebanese-American geneticist and neuroscientist who discovered the genetic basis of Rett syndrome and has made significant contributions to the understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders.
