Lok Nayak Hospital was originally established in 1936 as Irwin Hospital, to commemorate the visit of Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of India. In 1977, it was renamed Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital (LNJP Hospital) in honor of Jayaprakash Narayan's contributions to the Indian independence movement and his efforts towards social reform.
