Ludwik Hirszfeld (5 August 1884 – 7 March 1954) was a Polish microbiologist and serologist who made significant contributions to the field of immunology and hematology. He is best known for his work on the ABO blood group system and the Rh factor.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Ludwik Hirszfeld was born in Warsaw, which was then part of the Russian Empire. He studied medicine at the University of Würzburg and later at the University of Berlin, where he earned his medical degree in 1907.

Career and Research[edit | edit source]

Hirszfeld's early work focused on bacteriology and serology. He worked at the Institute for Infectious Diseases in Berlin under the guidance of Paul Ehrlich, a pioneer in the field of immunology.

ABO Blood Group System[edit | edit source]

In 1910, Hirszfeld, along with Emil von Dungern, discovered the inheritance patterns of the ABO blood group system. This discovery was crucial for the development of safe blood transfusion practices.

Rh Factor[edit | edit source]

During World War II, Hirszfeld and his wife, Hanna Hirszfeld, conducted research on the Rh factor, a protein found on the surface of red blood cells. Their work helped to understand hemolytic disease of the newborn and improved the safety of blood transfusions.

Later Years[edit | edit source]

After the war, Hirszfeld became a professor at the University of Warsaw and later at the Medical University of Wrocław. He continued his research and published numerous papers on immunology and hematology.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Ludwik Hirszfeld was married to Hanna Hirszfeld, who was also a prominent scientist. They had one daughter, Maria. Hirszfeld passed away on 7 March 1954 in Wrocław, Poland.

Hirszfeld's contributions to the field of immunology and hematology have had a lasting impact on medical science. His work on the ABO blood group system and the Rh factor remains foundational in the field of transfusion medicine.
