MPNST

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

MPNST or Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor is a rare form of cancer that affects the peripheral nerves. It is also known as neurofibrosarcoma and is associated with NF1, a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form on nerve tissue.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The symptoms of MPNST can vary greatly depending on the location and size of the tumor. Common symptoms include:

  • Pain or a deep aching sensation
  • A growing mass or lump
  • Neurological problems such as weakness, numbness, or difficulty with movement

Causes[edit | edit source]

MPNST is often associated with Neurofibromatosis type 1, a genetic disorder. However, it can also occur spontaneously without any known cause. Exposure to radiation is another risk factor for developing MPNST.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of MPNST typically involves a combination of physical examination, imaging tests such as MRI or CT scan, and a biopsy to examine the cells of the tumor under a microscope.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for MPNST usually involves surgery to remove the tumor. This may be followed by radiation therapy or chemotherapy to kill any remaining cancer cells. In some cases, targeted therapies may be used.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

The prognosis for MPNST varies depending on the size and location of the tumor, as well as the patient's overall health. Early detection and treatment can improve the prognosis.
