Nunez-Smith completed her residency in internal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and a fellowship in general internal medicine at Yale University.

Nunez-Smith is a professor of internal medicine, public health, and management at the Yale School of Medicine. She also serves as the director of the Equity Research and Innovation Center (ERIC) at Yale.
