Marcus Samuelsson (born Kassahun Tsegie; January 25, 1971) is an Ethiopian-born, Swedish-raised chef and restaurateur. He is the head chef of Red Rooster in Harlem, New York City. Samuelsson is known for his innovative approach to cuisine, blending traditional Swedish flavors with those of other cultures, particularly African and American.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Marcus Samuelsson was born in Ethiopia and was orphaned during a tuberculosis epidemic. He and his sister were adopted by Ann Marie and Lennart Samuelsson, a Swedish couple, and he grew up in Gothenburg, Sweden. Samuelsson developed an interest in cooking at a young age, inspired by his grandmother, Helga, who was a professional cook.

Samuelsson attended the Culinary Institute of Gothenburg and later apprenticed at several prestigious restaurants in Switzerland and France, including Restaurant Aquavit in New York City.

Samuelsson's career took off when he became the executive chef of Aquavit in New York City at the age of 24. Under his leadership, the restaurant received a three-star rating from The New York Times, making him the youngest chef to receive such an accolade.

Red Rooster[edit | edit source]

In 2010, Samuelsson opened Red Rooster in Harlem, New York City. The restaurant quickly became a cultural and culinary landmark, known for its celebration of Harlem's rich history and diverse culinary traditions. The menu features a blend of Southern, Caribbean, and Ethiopian flavors.

Samuelsson has appeared on several television shows, including Top Chef, Chopped, and Iron Chef America. He won the title of Top Chef Master in 2010. He is also a frequent guest on The Today Show and The Martha Stewart Show.

Samuelsson is the author of several cookbooks and a memoir, Yes, Chef, which chronicles his journey from Ethiopia to becoming a world-renowned chef. His other notable books include The Soul of a New Cuisine and Marcus Off Duty.

Samuelsson is married to model Maya Haile, and they have one child. The family resides in Harlem, New York City. Samuelsson is also involved in various charitable activities, including the CARE organization and the C-CAP (Careers through Culinary Arts Program).

Awards and Recognition[edit | edit source]

Samuelsson has received numerous awards throughout his career, including the James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef: New York City in 2003. He was also named one of the Top 40 Under 40 by Crain's New York Business.
