Marie Roslyn Bashir (born 1 December 1930) is an Australian psychiatrist and former Governor of New South Wales. She was the first woman to be appointed to the position.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Marie Bashir was born in Narrandera, New South Wales, to Lebanese parents. She attended the University of Sydney, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1956.

Medical career[edit | edit source]

Bashir began her medical career working in psychiatry and later became a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Sydney. She was instrumental in the development of mental health services for children and adolescents in New South Wales.

Governor of New South Wales[edit | edit source]

In 2001, Bashir was appointed as the Governor of New South Wales, becoming the first woman to hold the position. During her tenure, she focused on issues related to mental health, education, and indigenous Australians. She served until 2014, making her one of the longest-serving governors in the state's history.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Marie Bashir is married to Nicholas Shehadie, a former Lord Mayor of Sydney and rugby union player. They have three children.

Honours and awards[edit | edit source]

Throughout her career, Bashir has received numerous honours, including being appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) and a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO).
